Did You Know That?
In Nigeria, a woman dies every 10.5 minutes from pregnancy-related complications. These are not just
statistics: they are mothers, sisters, daughters, friends.
Most deaths are preventable. When a nurse knows what
to do in the first five minutes, she becomes a guardian of
life. Through TORM, we are building a network of skilled
responders capable of rewriting the story of maternal
health in Nigeria
Imagine This
A pregnant woman is rushed into the hospital, bleeding
heavily and on the verge of shock. The first responder
begins routine checks: vital signs, documentation, calling a doctor, but in obstetric emergencies, every second
matters. Before intervention begins, it’s too late. Another
life lost
What could have made a difference?
Swift action. Expert knowledge. A well-trained first responder who knows exactly what to do within the first five minutes.
This is the gap the Train One to Reach Many (TORM)
Campaign aims to bridge
The TORM Campaign by Birthsafe Nigeria
is not just a training program; it is a national lifesaving movement. Our mission is to empower 1,000 frontline nurses and midwives in Lagos, Kano, Rivers, Oyo, and the FCT with the emergency obstetric skills they need to save lives and transform maternal care, one birth at a time.
These trained first responders will be empowered to act within the first five minutes of any obstetric emergency, because in those moments, the golden hour can be the difference between life, death, or permanent disability. Every trained nurse is a vessel of hope, capable of saving not one, but thousands of mothers and babies
across their community and state
The Goal Is
To build a highly responsive first line of care by training 1,000 first responder nurses and midwives across five states to collaboratively and confidently identify and manage obstetric emergencies within the first five minutes and subsequently the first hour, ultimately improving pregnancy and fetal outcomes for over 250,000 pregnant women.

Train 200 first responder nurses and midwives in each of the 5 project states (total: 1,000 nurses)

Ensure trained first responders can work swiftly and collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to take decisive, life-saving action within five minutes of an emergency

Empower participants with advanced skills for rapid identification and management of obstetric emergencies

Position the trained nurses to impact 250,000+ pregnant women.
Our Mission Is
- To save at least one million women and babies every year from traumatic outcomes in pregnancy and childbirth in alignment with Sustainable

Hear the amazing experiences of some nurses and midwives:

It reminded me of a lot of things I’ve forgotten and newer knowledge too. It made me remember how passionate I was about midwifery and I’ve used it to health educate others. Infact I’ve been more outspoken to pregnant women and new mothers.
I also organised a health talk for teachers and non teaching staff and it was a great success. My major lesson is to speak out, a lot of birth related traumatic experiences are not spoken about, and my aim is to educate others to my greatest capacity.

Thank you for the opportunity to provide feedback on the National Webinar on Midwifery: War Against Traumatic Birth; Managing Pregnancy Conditions which Complicate Childbirth.
The lessons learned from the webinar have been instrumental in improving the quality of care I provide to patients in several ways:
1. Proactive Management of Complications: The detailed discussions on managing conditions such as eclampsia, placenta previa, and obstructed labour have equipped me with strategies to anticipate complications and intervene effectively, improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.
2. Improved Communication: The emphasis on clear, empathetic communication with patients and their families during labor and delivery has helped to build trust and reduce anxiety, particularly in high-risk situations.
3. Holistic Care Approach: The focus on psychological support for women who experience traumatic births has influenced my approach to providing holistic care, addressing both physical and emotional recovery.
4. Patient Education: I’ve integrated better educational practices to inform expectant mothers about warning signs of complications and the importance of timely healthcare-seeking behaviour, empowering them to take an active role in their health.

As a result of the training, I improved my knowledge on how to manage birth complications as am in a place where I come across alot of patients with PPH.
I also learnt more ways of noting key signs of birth complications or trauma in mothers and babies as soon as I come across them.

I have been able to encourage my patients to come for early booking as soon as they confirmed their pregnancy. They should always speak up and ask questions when necessary.
And If any of these causes are seen, I have always reassured them and proceed towards the prompt management. If need be for referral to tertiary institution, I will do that

The webinar was so impactful as it helps me to give proper care to pregnant women at each stage of the pregnancy development and to rule out birth defects in newborns. When I was on duty, I was able to familiarize with my patients and told them about the My Birthsafe app that will be launched soon and we are all expecting it. It also help me to gain more mastery of my skills and to handle newborns with utmost care in the course of discharging my duties. My patients were now discharged home radiant, happy and beaming with joy with their babies normal and alive. It was really enlightening, educative and life-changing.

So, the session was well structured. It provided an environment that was encouraging and kept we attendees focused, and in the process, we were actively involved.
The inclusion of a quiz and cash prize motivated participation and facilitated learning.
Lessons learned were used to improve patient care through early identification of risks associated with pregnancy/labor. Also, continuous monitoring leads to a safer childbirth outcome
overall, it was a valuable initiative👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

The webinar on preventing birth trauma has helped in managing my patients better, improved my practices and helped prevent birth trauma during delivery of babies

I learnt to be more patient with my patients during the process of labour and allow the patient choose someone she is more comfortable with to assist in her care and also allow the patient adopt any birth position she is comfortable with.

The webinar was very impactful.
We were thought on the danger signs on pregnancy, how to identify these signs and mange them.
Most importantly it has improved how I provide services to the clients whereby I don’t ignore any slight sign I perceive. even when the client says she doesn’t experience such again,I try as much as I can to be thorough.
And I’ve also told some of them about the app they haven’t enrolled yet but they are open to the idea in cases of emergency and when a health center isn’t close or the health provider isn’t reachable, they have professionals who are always ready for them.
